As every educator knows, learning loss in students has been significant. Many kids are struggling with literacy and teachers need tools designed to help. So we wanted to let you know about our new partnership with Lumio, a tool that helps educators easily create collaborative learning experiences.
Read on to learn more about how to use Lumio and Epic together in your classroom!
What’s Lumio?
Lumio is a free digital learning tool that transforms lessons into active, collaborative experiences that engage students on their devices, wherever they are.
With Lumio, you can easily import the lessons you already use, different file types (PDFs, Google Slides, PowerPoint and Notebook files) and enhance them with customizable components including games, group workspaces, formative assessments and much more. There’s also lots of ready-made content available for you, or you can start from scratch to create the exact lesson you need, all with engaging activities and options.
Working together to bring you ready-made lessons and activities
We’ve teamed up with Lumio to create several fun, interactive and engaging lessons (with more coming) to help students reflect and understand the books they’ve read in Epic. Explore the Reading with Epic collection in Lumio and you can use these ready-made lessons and resources in your class right now, or edit to include your own ideas.
How to get started?
Make sure to sign up for Epic School (free!) and Lumio (also free!). Then, dive into the thousands of digital books that are ready and available in Epic. Use in your classroom for:
- Reading assignments: Assign students books from Epic’s library to read on their own time. You can also create reading lists for your students customized to their interests and reading levels. Use Lumio and create individual handouts or collaborative workspaces to reflect on their reading assignments alone or in groups.
- Guided reading groups: Use Epic and Lumio to facilitate guided reading groups, where students read and discuss books together. Epic and Lumio also provide progress updates so you can monitor students’ reading progress and provide feedback.
- Literacy centers: Create a literacy center in your classroom using Epic and ask students to explore the different books independently or with a partner. Get insights into students’ thinking by including a Lumio activity that can be used with any book from the Epic library.
- Differentiated instruction: Epic provides tools for assessing students’ reading levels and recommending books that match their interests and abilities. This allows teachers to provide differentiated instruction and tailor their teaching to the needs of each student. To further personalize learning, use Lumio so students can select their own text and then respond to it.
- Classroom library: Teachers can use Epic as a digital classroom library, providing students with access to a wide range of books and resources.
In addition to these classroom applications, Epic also provides teachers resources to help them integrate reading into their day.
Pair Epic books with ready-made Lumio lessons to reflect and understand the books you’ve just read. Try a reading response activity about the characters, sequencing, or setting in a book and reflect as a whole class to share ideas and get your students involved.
Other Lumio lessons include Text Features and Images to better understand the different parts of a book, Growth Mindset for introducing the journey of characters and storylines, as well as Biography Research to help students research and study books better.
